The Axis with Chaguito and NATAL
In April 2012 The Axis were in Havana with Chaguito. Before they went Richard Kensington organised for NATAL drums (www.nataldrums.com) to provide some congas for Chaguito. The guys at NATAL came up trumps and gave The Axis 3 Natal Spirit congas to take out to Cuba to give to Chaguito; The first NATAL drums in Havana (as far as we know!). This video was made so that everyone at NATAL and the rest of the world could see these drums being played in Havana with Chaguito and The Axis. The rhythm being played is rumba guaguanco in Chaguito's own style. The tower in the background is in Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana. The video was shot on the roof of camera man and film maker Jorge Proenza. The song 'Con Natal' was written by Chaguito especially for the people at Natal to express his gratitude for the drums.
Chaguito Y Sus Timberos: WEYA
This is a film made by Richard Kensington while out in Cuba with the Axis Percussion Trio. The Cuban film maker and camera man, Jorge Proenza also helped a lot with the filming. The Film shows Chaguito Y Sus Timberos singing a composition by Chaguito about the bands involvement with WEYA (World Event Young Artist). This is a festival being held in Nottingham in September 2012 that will see Chaguito Y Sus Timberos coming to Nottingham to Perform. The song is in the style of Conga Orientales. This is a Cuban Carnival style of drumming played in the east of Cuba.
Chaguito Y Sus Timberos
This is a film of 'Chaguito Y Sus Timberos' playing in Havana on Saturday 21st April in The Cabildo Quisicuaba (http://www.cabildoquisicuaba.cult.cu/) in the community of Los Sitios in Havana, Cuba. The film shows Chaguito singing a Rumba Columbia accompanied by drums playing his style of Columbia which is characterised by the highly syncopated pattern played on the second drum. The song is typical of the style in that it reflects the social and political issues relevant to the people of the community. In this case it is a song calling for justice for the 5 Cuban political prisoners known as 'Los Cinco', held by the US government.
Chaguito Y Sus Timberos - Guarapachaguito
This video shows a classic example of Guarapachaguito. Guarapachaguito is a rumba groove based around Guaguanco using cajon and Tres Dos, Tumba and Quinto. The Tumba pattern in this style is referred to as the 'Guarabombo'. The rhythm has been invented by Santiago Garzon Rill aka "Chaguito" who can be seen here singing at the front.
